Ambition Framework: Taming the Tongue

Taming the Tongue in the Marketplace: Speaking with Kingdom Ambition

"Righteous lips are the delight of kings; and they love him that speaketh right." (Proverbs 16:13)

In every workplace, words are currency. Deals are negotiated through words, relationships are built through words, teams are inspired through words, and unfortunately, reputations can also be destroyed through words. While many professionals focus on developing technical skills, Kingdom-minded believers understand that one of the greatest indicators of spiritual maturity and leadership is the ability to govern the tongue.

As part of our Ambition Series, we must recognise that holy ambition is not merely about reaching positions of influence but about representing Christ accurately wherever we serve. The marketplace needs professionals whose speech reflects heaven's culture.

Reverential speech is righteous speech. It is not merely avoiding profanity or speaking politely. It is speech that honours God, edifies people, and advances His purposes. One practical way to remember the characteristics of righteous speech is through the mnemonic SPEECH.

S - SCRIPTURAL SPEECH

"Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly in all wisdom..." (Colossians 3:16)

Kingdom speech begins with God's Word. Whatever fills the heart eventually flows from the mouth. Joshua was instructed that the Book of the Law should not depart from his mouth because God's Word produces success and prosperity according to His purposes (Joshua 1:8).

Marketplace Application

Many conversations in the workplace are driven by fear, negativity, speculation, and worldly wisdom. The believer must become known for speaking truth anchored in biblical principles.

Instead of saying:

  • "Nothing ever works in this company."
  • "This economy is hopeless."
  • "There is no opportunity left."

Speak biblical truth:

  • "God always provides wisdom for those who ask."
  • "Challenges create opportunities for innovation."
  • "Let's trust God and apply wisdom to find a solution."

Scriptural speech does not mean quoting verses in every meeting. It means allowing biblical values such as integrity, faith, hope, wisdom, and love to shape your communication.

Practical Question: Are my daily conversations reflecting God's perspective or the world's perspective?

P - PROPHETIC SPEECH

"If anyone speaks, let him speak as the oracles of God." (1 Peter 4:11)

Prophetic speech is not merely predicting the future. It is speaking in alignment with God's heart, purpose, and truth. Knowing the Word is crucial in prophetic speech. When you align with the Word of God, you speak life into the situation.

Marketplace Application

Many organisations are filled with people who continually focus on problems. Kingdom professionals are solution-oriented and life-giving individuals.

Prophetic speech:

  • Sees potential where others see limitations.
  • Speaks faith where others speak fear.
  • Encourages progress where others expect failure.

When a colleague feels overwhelmed, prophetic speech says:

"I know this project is difficult, but I believe we have the capacity and wisdom to succeed."

When a team experiences setbacks, prophetic speech does not deny reality, but it declares possibility and hope.

Your words can help shape the atmosphere of a department, a boardroom, or an entire organisation.

Practical Question: Do my words release faith, vision, and hope into the environment I influence?

E - EXEMPLARY SPEECH

"Be an example to the believers in word..." (1 Timothy 4:12)

Leadership is not only demonstrated through actions but also through speech.

Marketplace Application

People are constantly observing:

  • How you respond under pressure.
  • How you speak about management.
  • How you speak about clients.
  • How you speak about competitors.
  • How you speak when things do not go your way.

An exemplary employee is not a participant in gossip, slander, or character assassination. Their words align with the standards they claim to represent.

Before joining workplace conversations, ask:

  • Is this conversation honourable?
  • Is this conversation necessary?
  • Would I say this if the person were standing next to me?

People trust leaders whose speech remains consistent regardless of who is in the room.

Practical Question: Would others see Christ in the way I speak during stressful situations?

E - EDIFYING SPEECH

"Let no corrupt word proceed out of your mouth, but what is good for necessary edification." (Ephesians 4:29)

The righteous mouth is described as a "well of life" (Proverbs 10:11). This means our words should refresh, strengthen, and build others no matter their personal beliefs.

Marketplace Application

Every workplace contains people carrying unseen burdens:

  • Personal struggles.
  • Financial pressure.
  • Family challenges.
  • Professional disappointment.

A simple word of encouragement can change someone's day.

Edifying speech includes:

  • Recognising effort.
  • Celebrating progress.
  • Offering constructive feedback.
  • Speaking encouragement during setbacks.

Edifying speech excludes:

  • Gossip.
  • Criticism intended to wound.
  • Constant negativity.
  • Destructive complaints.

Psalm 15 reminds us that those who dwell in God's presence do not backbite or carry reproach against others.

Before speaking about someone, consider:

"Will my words build a bridge or burn one?"

Practical Question: Are my words bringing life or draining life from those around me?

C - COURTEOUS SPEECH

"Let your speech always be with grace, seasoned with salt..." (Colossians 4:6)

Courtesy has become increasingly rare in many workplaces. Deadlines, stress, and pressure often produce impatience and harsh communication.

Yet Scripture teaches that the righteous know what is acceptable (Proverbs 10:32) and carefully consider how they answer others (Proverbs 15:28).

Marketplace Application

Courteous speech means:

  • Listening before responding.
  • Speaking respectfully, even when disagreeing.
  • Avoiding sarcasm and cutting remarks.
  • Expressing gratitude frequently.
  • Refusing to complain constantly.

Consider the difference:

Instead of:

"This is completely wrong."

Try:

"Let's review this together and see how we can improve it."

Instead of:

"That's not my problem."

Try:

"Let me see how I can assist or direct you to the right person."

Courteous speech reflects emotional maturity and spiritual maturity.

Practical Question: Would people describe my communication as gracious and respectful?

H - HONEST SPEECH

"Putting away lying, 'Let each one of you speak truth with his neighbour.'" (Ephesians 4:25)

Integrity is the foundation of Kingdom influence. Honesty builds trust, and trust opens doors for greater responsibility.

Marketplace Application

Honest speech means:

  • Being truthful about mistakes.
  • Keeping commitments.
  • Accurately representing products and services.
  • Refusing to exaggerate achievements.
  • Communicating transparently.

Many careers have been damaged not by incompetence but by dishonesty.

In sales, leadership, recruitment, finance, or customer service, our credibility becomes one of our greatest assets.

Kingdom ambition never sacrifices integrity to achieve success.

A believer's word should be dependable because their character is dependable.

Practical Question: Can people trust my words without needing constant verification?

The Workplace Tongue Audit

At the end of each workday, ask yourself:

Was my speech:

✅ Scriptural?
✅ Prophetic?
✅ Exemplary?
✅ Edifying?
✅ Courteous?
✅ Honest?

If not, repent quickly, learn intentionally, and grow continuously.

The goal is not perfection but transformation.

Conclusion: A Mouth That Reflects the King

Proverbs 16:13 teaches that righteous lips delight kings. As ambassadors of Christ in the marketplace, our speech should reflect the values of the King we serve.

In a culture of criticism, be encouraging.

In a culture of gossip, be trustworthy.

In a culture of fear, be faith-filled.

In a culture of complaint, be grateful.

In a culture of deception, be honest.

Your words are more than sounds. They are seeds. Every conversation plants something in the hearts of those who hear you. When your speech becomes SCRIPTURAL, PROPHETIC, EXEMPLARY, EDIFYING, COURTEOUS, and HONEST, you become a carrier of Kingdom culture in the marketplace, and your ambition becomes not merely the pursuit of success, but the representation of Christ wherever He places you.

Prayer

Father, set a watch over my mouth and guard the door of my lips. Let my words reflect Your truth, wisdom, and grace. Make me a source of encouragement, integrity, and life in every workplace conversation and dealing. May my speech honour You, build others, and advance Your Kingdom in the marketplace. In Jesus' name, Amen.
